Mug Soap Going Extinct?

Gone are the days when you could walk in to your neighborhood drug store and purchase a puck of William's Mug Soap for under a dollar. When were these days? About six months ago, as far as I can tell. That's when I purchased my last supply. Now, I am forced to look elsewhere. Naturally Yours carries Urban Cowboy shaving soap, but it's priced ridiculously and smells like cheap cologne. I've called several mom and pop drug stores that don't carry shaving soap or brushes. I guess I will have to start a shaving revolution before things will get better. Until then, I guess disposable razors will continue to pile up in landfills.

Now, I'm off for a relaxing hot shave...

I know... He only shaves a small one inch by one inch patch on each cheek. You could use a single disposable razor for 3 or 4 months like that. If you get one of the Gillette Mach 3s, then the only disposable part is the very small detatchable blades. They're not like the Bics, which are a lot more waistfull.

Well, there is a rather large area of my neck that I shave. However, it's more about the quality of the shave. Using any wet shave technique is far superior to commercial shaving creams. Actually, Mug Soap is on the lower end of the shaving cream spectrum. Fine Italian creams are where it's at.

Keith -

Believe it or not, my barber will still break out the straight razor, strap and soap and shave ya. Seriously... Maybe he has some black market source..

Maybe you'll have to order it online....

Well, I know of at least one barber that still does it in Joliet, but I'm not sure it's very legal. One barber I spoke to on the phone, when trying to locate shaving cream, told me they weren't allowed to give straight shaves.

cheers

Keith & Josh

e-mail me @ kevin@chefkevincooks.com If it is illegal (why?) I don't want to get my barber in any trouble.

"Some areas require barbers who provide straight-razor shaving to use a version that employs a disposable blade system. Still other jurisdictions ban the use of all straight razors and barbers use modern disposable blade razors instead. In places such as New Zealand, Pennsylvania, Denver, Boston, Texas and San Diego, however, the use of straight razors is legal."

This is from Wikipedia. It does have sources, but I didn't check them out.

Shaving brushes are alive and well in Europe. Stores in Venice for example had ample supply of badger brushes from $25 to $2000.
Soap was available, but I don't know the fragrance or texture.

Skin products for specific skin types have been available for a number of years now, and products like shaving soaps, shaving creams, and facial skin care which are formulated for men are slowly gaining popularity. However, before choosing what products to use on their faces, men should start with the basic issue, and that is to know specific skin type first.
